Faculty Recognition

UNC Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award
This award is the highest post-secondary award in the state and carries the expectation that applicants will be exceptional teachers who have extended their pedagogical activities beyond the classroom. The Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes a tenured faculty member who has completed at least seven years of teaching at UNCG, with an average teaching load over the three years preceding consideration of at least three courses per year. The Board of Governor’s Award brings statewide recognition.

Mary Settle Sharp Alumni Teaching Excellence Award
This award recognizes a full-time tenured faculty member who has completed at least three years of teaching at UNCG, with an average teaching load over the three years preceding consideration of at least three courses per year.

James Y. Joyner Alumni Teaching Excellence Award  
This award recognizes a full-time tenure-track faculty member who has completed at least three years of teaching at UNCG, with an average teaching load over the three years preceding consideration of at least three courses per year.

Anna Maria Gove Alumni Teaching Excellence Award  
This award recognizes any full-time lecturer, academic professional or clinical faculty member who has completed at least three years of teaching at UNCG, with an average teaching load over the three years preceding consideration of at least three courses per year.

Thomas Undergraduate Research Award
The Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Office (URSCO) requests nominations of outstanding UNCG faculty mentors for the Thomas Undergraduate Research Mentor Awards. They seek to recognize both pre-tenured (early career) and tenured (career) faculty for their efforts to engage undergraduates in experiential learning through research. These honors will include a plaque and $1,000 to support activities related to research and/or creative inquiry as it involves undergraduates during the following academic year.    

Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award  
Given by The Graduate School, this award acknowledges and honors a full-time tenured faculty member of UNCG who has enjoyed outstanding success in mentoring a cadre of graduate students at the master’s or doctoral level. To be eligible for nomination by a faculty colleague, an individual must have gained distinction as a mentor on the UNCG campus and be known for: facilitating student learning by making complex ideas understandable and meaningful to students; establishing and maintaining high academic standards; positive role modeling as a professional, with personal integrity, high ethical standards, and achievable standards for personal excellence; consistent and ongoing guidance of students regarding resources within and outside the university, conflict resolution, and advocacy for completion of the program of study in a timely manner; and having substantial influence on the academic and professional pursuits of students that may include funded research, co-authorship on publications, and co-presentations at national or international conferences. Each nominee must have demonstrated continuing success as a mentor over a significant portion of her/his career.

Student Learning Enhancement Awards
The Faculty Senate’s Student Learning Enhancement Committee, with the support of the Office of Academic Assessment, Accreditation, Academic Program Program Planning, initiated this award in 2010 to honor departments or individual faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in academic program assessment leading to enhanced student learning.

Advising Excellence Awards
The Advising Excellence Awards celebrates advisors who have shown exemplary use of campus resources, career-related information, and academic policies, demonstrate advising as a priority, and work to build positive relationships. Outstanding advising is recognized in two categories: Faculty with Academic Advising Responsibilities and Professional Academic Advisor. Nominees must be full-time employees with at least two years of service and must have on-going academic advising responsibilities.
 
Outstanding First Year Student Advocate Award
The Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate Award recognizes the significant contributions of faculty and staff who work to create a positive transition to college and promote the success of students’ first year at UNCG. Candidates show noteworthy impact on student learning and retention, demonstrate best practice when working with first-year students, and present contributions that are innovative and sustainable.  The award is open to any full-time or part-time UNCG faculty or staff member.

Gladys Strawn Bullard Award
A gift to the university from Bern F. and Gladys S. Bullard established The Gladys Strawn Bullard Awards in 1981. Named for Mrs. Bullard, a 1939 graduate of Woman’s College, they were created to recognize and reward members of the UNCG faculty, staff, and student body for outstanding leadership and service to the university. Award recipients are individuals who have not only demonstrated these qualities but have shown commendable initiative and perseverance in the process. In addition, their leadership has not only enabled them to get the job done, but inspired others to serve and lead.

James E. Holshouser Public Service Award
The Public Service Award was created in 2007 to encourage, identify, recognize, and reward public service by faculty of the University. Faculty of any of the 17 institutions of the University of North Carolina are eligible.

O. Max Gardner Award
This is the highest faculty honor awarded by the UNC Board of Governors and has been given annually since 1949. Each of the UNC universities may nominate one faculty member. The Gardner Award recognizes faculty who have “made the greatest contributions to the welfare of the human race.” Past recipients have made notable contributions of national or international scale. It is the only award for which all faculty members of the all UNC campuses are eligible.

In 1988, the Research Excellence Awards were established to recognize outstanding work of UNCG faculty in their field. A faculty committee reviews the nominations and recommends two faculty members to receive the awards.

The Early Career Research Excellence Award is for a scholar at the rank of assistant or associate professor. The award will be based primarily on work done at UNCG during the past five years.

The Senior Research Excellence Award is for a scholar at the rank of professor. The award will be made on the basis of the nominee’s research career, with particular emphasis placed on work done in the last five years.
