RE: Announcing Tanya Coakley Faculty Fellow in the Office of the Provost

I’m pleased to announce that Dr. Tanya Coakley, a Professor in the Department of Social Work in the School of Health and Human Sciences, has accepted the role of Faculty Fellow in the Office of the Provost during calendar year 2021.  In this role, Dr. Coakley will develop a mentoring program for faculty from underrepresented communities to enhance their productivity and advancement in research and academic leadership.  She will be working with me and Chancellor Gilliam and our respective teams on this important initiative.

In addition to her scholarship on minority health disparities, child welfare, and cultural competence, she has served on a number of research, technology, and equity committees at UNCG.  Most recently, to examine campus climate and racial equity, she was appointed to the Faculty Senate Task Force on Equity to help to develop an understanding of the experiences of Black and underrepresented faculty and students and identify university strengths and weaknesses in relation to policy implementation.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Coakley on this important new role.
