Academics

Head Start!

Spartan StartUp participants will be enrolled in Biology 105 and English 101,  two three-credit courses that will count towards their degree. These courses will be taught in a hybrid format with face-to-face and online instruction. Both courses will be taught in a cohort based model, meaning participants will take class with other participants. In order to enhance the academic experience, students will participate in a variety of academic support sessions including small group tutoring, academic skills workshops, and expert led review sessions.

Living and Learning

College Life!

Spartan StartUp is a residential program and all participants will be required to live on-campus in a pre-selected residence hall throughout the 5-week program. Living on-campus will allow students to build a community with their peers as they become familiar with the campus community and culture. Getting a head start on navigating campus can make the transition to college much easier. In fact, a few students of the Spartan Startup 2018 cohort mentioned that living on campus prior to the academic year was one of the most beneficial aspects of the program! Spartan StartUp 2019 participants will be housed in Phillips-Hawkins Residence Hall. You can find more information about the residence hall and list of suggested items to bring here.

Build a Support Network!

Outside of the classroom, we are committed to familiarizing students with the various resources offered on-campus. Throughout the 5-week program, students will participate in engaging workshops presented by our campus partners. These workshops will focus on students’ academic, personal, and social development to help aid in their transition to UNCG. The opportunity to build a network of support systems on campus before the academic year is an advantage heading into the fall semester!

Connect with a Mentor!

Throughout the summer experience, students will have access to Spartan StartUp Student Success Mentors  who will live on campus with students and serve as Resident Advisors (RAs).  Peer Mentors are students who know what it’s like being a first year student and are excited about helping participates discover and enjoy the journey to college!
