A partnership with the Department of Human Development and Family Studies and The Creative Aging Network (CAN-NC) is examining how the power of creative expression effects the well being of seniors with memory symptoms.
The ARTmail project is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts Research: Art Works Grant. Dr. Sudha Shreeniwas (UNCG) serves as the Principal Investigator for the grant, and Lia Miller, Co-founder and Executive Director of CAN-NC, is the community partner.
The eight-week program allows seniors from different Memory Care centers to partner together on the project. The inside of a cardboard box serves as their canvas.
Participants mail their “in progress” artwork to their partner, including comments about themselves so that their partner may learn more about them. At the end of the program, participants, friends, and family attend a public exhibition of the artwork.
