Leadership

Dean of Undergraduate Studies

Dr. Steve Roberson

Dr. Roberson was appointed as UNCG's first Dean of Undergraduate Studies. Prior to UNCG, Roberson was the Associate Dean of the Jordan College of Fine Arts and Professor of Music at Butler University. Roberson had been with Butler University since 1985, accepting the Associate Dean position in 1995 and serving two summer terms as the interim dean. While there he also led the successful reform of Butler's core curriculum and played a key role in the college's student advising and retention efforts. He holds a Ph.D. in Piano Pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma.

Director, Communication Across the Curriculum

Walter Beale, Ph.D.

Walter Beale joined the Department of English at UNCG in 1971, after receiving the Ph.D. in English from the University of Michigan. He served as Head of the English Department from 1988-1990, and then as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1990-2002. At the end of his deanship, he was given a very large party. He is proud to have been one of the founders of Writing Across the Curriculum in the College of Arts and Sciences—a program so successful that it was subsequently extended across the University and incorporated into the CAC program. Walter has directed this program since 2002, and he considers this his happiest assignment at UNCG.

Director, University Teaching & Learning Center

Dr. Ray Purdom

Dr. Purdom joined UNCG in 1996 and has been involved in higher education for over 37 years. He has a B.S. in physics from Duke University, and an M.S. and a PhD in physics from Purdue University. Before coming to UNCG, he held various positions at Kentucky Wesleyan College including Professor of Physics, Dean of the College and Interim President. During the 1994-95 academic year, he was Deans Fellow at the Council of Independent Colleges in Washington, DC. He currently serves on the Board of the University of North Carolina Teaching and Learning with Technology Collaborative and chairs the UNC Professional Development Portal Oversight Committee. He is also Editor of the MERLOT Teaching and Technology Discipline and Conference Director of the Lilly South Conference on College and University Teaching.

Director, Ione Grogan College

John Sopper, M.A.
