Statement from the Provost

The Handbook for Faculty is an important document for all faculty members (and EPA nonfaculty employees) of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. By referring to this document, faculty members will find information regarding the organization of the University, specific policies covering University employment, and many other aspects of the University community. This information is presented in nine sections:

  1. History and Mission
  2. University Organization and Governance
  3. Faculty Governance
  4. Teaching, Research, and Service
  5. Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure
  6. Salary, Leaves, and Benefits
  7. Other University Policies
  8. Services
  9. Organizations, Special Events, and Recreation

These descriptive and interpretive sections reference a number of policies approved through the various channels of the University. A complete listing of all University policies is available in the University Policy Manual of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

I encourage you to review this Handbook and to become familiar with the policies, procedures, and services that should be helpful to you during your tenure at the University. Questions related to materials in the Handbook should be addressed to this office.

Statement from the Committee on the Handbook for Faculty(Preface)

This is your Handbook, intended for your use. It is a compendium of selected policies, guidelines, and procedures as well as useful information describing and explaining your University. The Handbook was extensively revised for the first time in 1987 by ten University faculty in the hope that it would answer many of your questions about how the University actually works. In the years since that time, the Handbook continues to be updated and revised in order that its contents remain as useful to you as possible. The current revision was also undertaken with this goal clearly in mind.

Though it is scrupulous in its reproduction of important administrative documents, this Handbook expresses a faculty point of view, and its theme, implicit and explicit, is collegiality - that active collaboration which brings the faculty and administrators together in the service of the University and its goals. Whatever else this Handbook is meant to do, nothing is more important than its encouragement of mutual understanding and responsible participation throughout the life of the University, from the offices in Mossman to the classroom of the newest instructor. Some of that participation will be formal, in committees or in the General Faculty, but much of it will and should take place in the informal give-and-take of daily exchanges. All of it is important.

Policy on Discriminatory Conduct

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is committed to the principle that educational and employment decisions should be based on an individual's abilities and qualifications and should not be based on personal characteristics or beliefs that have no relevance to academic ability or to job performance. Accordingly, UNCG supports policies, curricula and co-curricular activities that encourage understanding of and appreciation for all members of its community. UNCG will not tolerate any harassment of, discrimination against, or disrespect for persons. UNCG is committed to equal opportunity in education and employment for all persons regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, age, national origin, disability, military veteran status, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

This policy applies internally as well as to the University's relationships with outside organizations, except to the extent that those organizations, including the federal and state government, the military, ROTC, or private employers do not yet recognize sexual orientation as protected.

The University's educational and employment practices are consistent with Section 103 of The Code of The University of North Carolina. In addition, the University complies with North Carolina General Statutes 126-16 and 126-17, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1988, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the Rehabilitation Act or 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Vietnam Era Veteran's Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974, and other federal and state laws relating to discrimination in educational programs and employment. In accord with Executive Order 11246, the University has in place an Affirmative Action Plan which states the University's commitment to the concept and practice of equal employment opportunity for all persons regardless of race, color creed, religion, gender, age, national origin, disability, military veteran status, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

Any employee who believes he or she has been treated unfairly based on any of the above characteristics should contact his or her immediate supervisor, or the next level supervisor if the immediate supervisor is the subject of the allegation. Students should contact the Office of Student Affairs.

Retaliatory action of any kind will not be tolerated against any person for making a good faith report of discrimination or on the basis of that person's participation in any allegation, investigation or proceeding related to the report of discriminatory conduct. Every UNCG employee and student is charged with the responsibility to be aware of and abide by this policy. Failure to abide by this policy may subject the violator to disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.
