The Department of Art at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Head. The appointment will be at the rank of Professor with tenure and will be effective August 1, 2010. The Department seeks an energetic leader to provide effective intellectual, creative and administrative leadership for the department. Candidates should be artists and/or scholars who have significant experience and achievement within their field, have a terminal degree, and be interested in taking on a leadership position. The initial term of appointment for the head is four years with the opportunity for reappointment. Upon completion of the term, the candidate will become member of the general art faculty.

The Department, with 27 full-time faculty and 4 staff members, offers BFA and BA degrees in studio art, art history/museum studies, and art education. The department currently directs 555 undergraduate art majors and offers a two-year MFA degree in studio art with 15 – 20 enrolled students. The program benefits from a committed and dynamic professional faculty, a new state of the art studio facility, and a close working relationship with the Weatherspoon Art Museum. The Department of Art (http://www.uncg.edu/art/) is one of twenty-one departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, the largest academic unit of the University.

UNCG, one of sixteen campuses in the University of North Carolina system, is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research University with High Research Activity and has an enrollment of approximately 18,000 students.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will:

Demonstrate a collegial and inclusive leadership style

Be dedicated to mentoring faculty

Take a flexible, comprehensive, and creative approach to the visual arts and be able to bridge the disciplines of studio art, art history/museum studies, and art education

Demonstrate wide-ranging knowledge of traditional and new media as they relate to contemporary art theory and practice

Be experienced in managing budgets, external fundraising and managing existing resources

Have a strong record of scholarship or creative activity and teaching
