Responsibilities: Vice Chancellor for Research & Economic Development The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) is seeking nominations and applications for the position of Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development. UNCG has been classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a comprehensive doctoral, research university with “high research activity” and in the community engagement classification under Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships. The Vice Chancellor reports directly to the Provost and is a member of both the Deans Council and Chancellor’s Executive Staff. The primary units reporting to the Vice Chancellor include: the Offices of Undergraduate Research, Sponsored Programs, Technology Transfer and Research Compliance; three research centers (Center for Biotechnology, Genomics, and Health Research; Center for Youth, Family, and Community Partnerships; and Center for Research Excellence in the Nanobiosciences), and the Institute for Community and Economic Engagement. In addition, the Vice Chancellor is expected to collaborate with UNCG’s Gateway University Research Park, the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, and SERVE (Southeastern Regional Vision for Education). The Vice Chancellor is the chief research officer responsible for assuring academic integrity in research and compliance with federal, state and local regulations and policies pertaining to research and technology transfer. Primary responsibilities are to provide visionary leadership and to promote excellence and growth in research and economic development. Working with the senior administrative team to craft and execute a university-wide research agenda, the Vice Chancellor is responsible for facilitating research and creative activities and ensuring adequate research infrastructure to support excellence in research and scholarship across all disciplines. The Vice Chancellor will provide leadership in the development and evolution of interdisciplinary initiatives, research centers and institutes as well as formal and informal research networks; will strengthen the university’s links with the external community in existing, expanded, and new partnerships, provide statewide and national leadership on significant research issues; promote the university’s research agenda with industry, relevant federal and state agencies and oversee federal relations; lead the university’s creation of new links with other institutions and research organizations; and guarantee the ethical, informed and safe conduct of research. With regard to economic development, the Vice Chancellor will assist the Chancellor, Provost, and other academic leaders in the establishment and expansion of strategic partnerships focused on a wide range of business, industrial, and artistic fields, resulting in the commercialization of the fruits of research and creative activity through interaction with external constituencies. The Vice Chancellor will provide leadership for UNCG’s economic development strategy, will direct the research and analysis of the university’s impact in this realm, coordinate institutional economic development initiatives with the faculty, staff, and students, and coordinate UNCG’s efforts to enhance entrepreneurship on campus and throughout the Piedmont Triad region, state, and nation. Founded in 1891, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is one of the three original campuses comprising The University of North Carolina system. The University has a long-standing commitment to academic excellence. UNCG is a research university with high research activity (Carnegie classification). The fall 2008 enrollment totals approximately 13,700 undergraduate students and 3,700 graduate students. 67% of the undergraduate students are female and 33% are male. Of the undergraduate students 7.5% are from out-of-state, 22% are African-American, and 31% live in residence halls. Undergraduates have a choice of over 100 areas of study from which to select a major leading to one of seven undergraduate degrees. There are 25 doctoral programs, four Master of Fine Arts Degrees, and 59 master’s degree programs in a wide variety of majors and concentrations. Among its approximately 900 full-time faculty members are nationally known scholars who regularly contribute to new knowledge in their fields through research and other creative work. Greensboro is a beautiful and thriving city of 259,000 with many outstanding public and private recreation areas and facilities. The city offers opportunities in a variety of visual and performing arts: symphony orchestra, community and professional theater, arts council, ballet/dance and museums. In addition, a major sports/entertainment coliseum, professional baseball stadium and an exciting revitalized downtown district are located near UNCG. Greensboro is located in the Piedmont Triad Region (over 1.5 million people) which has 11 colleges and universities within an area of great natural beauty, diverse industry, cultural arts, historic sites, and mild temperatures. North Carolina’s mountains are an easy two-hour drive and the Atlantic beaches of the Carolinas are just over three hours away. Qualifications: Candidates should have a proven record of leadership in administrative management, budgetary responsibility, regulatory and compliance issues, coordination of interdisciplinary activities including creating and sustaining centers and institutes, and an understanding of federal appropriation processes. Candidates should have a broad knowledge of the sponsored-research regulatory environment and federal policies and procedures, an understanding of the breadth of faculty research and creative activity, a record of success in assisting university faculty in the advancement of their research programs, and a commitment to the involvement of students and trainees in research. Candidates must also have experience in the practices of economic development, job and company creation through leveraging university spawned innovation and invention. A wide range of relevant professional backgrounds are appropriate for this position, including faculty or research scholar within a traditional university setting or a governmental or private non-profit research organization, or senior program officer in a federal research office or similar entity. A graduate degree is required; a terminal academic degree along with a record of research and extramural funding accomplishments is preferred.
