Responsibilities:
Head of Reference and Instructional Services


The University of North Carolina at Greensboro University Libraries invite applications from innovative and dynamic individuals to lead our reference and instructional programs. Reporting to the Associate Director for Public Services this individual will lead a team of eight librarians and four paraprofessionals in an academic library that provides service and instruction for the humanities, social sciences, sciences and government information. The Reference and Instructional Services Department has a culture and history of providing excellent service and an active instructional program. It is a twelve-month tenured or tenure-track faculty position. Demonstrated professional achievement, service, and scholarly/creative activity are required for reappointment and tenure.

Major Responsibilities:

• Provides leadership for overall administration, planning, assessment and staffing for reference and instructional services.

• With the departmental faculty and staff, evaluates existing services and collections and develops new and innovative services.

• Defines and articulates departmental missions and goals.

• Participates in reference and instructional activities.

• Manages the print and electronic reference collection and its budget.

• Works with the instructional librarians to plan, manage, assess and market onsite and virtual library instruction.

• Supervises, mentors and evaluates reference and instructional librarians and staff.

• Serves as a liaison to selected academic departments and participates in collection management activities.

• Works collaboratively with other department heads on service issues.

• As a member of the Administrative Advisory Group participates with other department heads to form policies for the University Libraries.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:

• ALA-accredited MLS.

• Minimum of five years experience in reference and instructional services in an academic library.

• Minimum of two years of leadership and experience managing and supervising others.

• Demonstrated commitment to service excellence.

• Excellent interpersonal skills evidenced by the ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, student and staff.

• Proven problem solving, organizational and analytical skills.

• Excellent written communication skills.

• Experience in the design and delivery of library instruction.

• Demonstrated aptitude and experience with relevant information technology.


Preferred Qualifications:

• A second advanced degree

• Experience in collection management.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Standard benefits include state or optional (including TIAA/CREF) retirement plans, state health plan, and 24 vacation days per year.
