Assistant Professor

Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track position. Nine-month appointment. Start date is August 2009.

Responsibilities

Join an active, ambitious, forward-looking department focused on teaching, research/scholarship, and service missions. Teach all levels of contemporary dance and multiple levels of ballet in rotation with other studio faculty. Contribute to broadening the curriculum to include global dance perspectives and/or techniques. Teach one or more of the following: dance improvisation, somatic practices, digital technology for dance, dance repertory/performance, or choreography. Develop and sustain a strong record of research and/or creative achievement. Advise and mentor students. Participate in faculty governance and in shaping future department policies and curricula.

The Department

The Department of Dance, one of five academic departments in the School of Health and Human Performance, includes 11.75 permanent faculty positions and 10 graduate assistantships, and offers academic programs for approximately 125 undergraduate major students and 25-30 graduate students. Degree programs offered include the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, and Master of Fine Arts. Faculty and graduate students are engaged in scholarly and creative activity with a number of colloquia, seminars, and performances annually. Approximately 15 performances are scheduled each year in the Department’s theater. NASD accredited. Further information regarding the Department may be found at its website, www.uncg.edu/dce/.

The University

Established in 1891, the University is one of five doctorate-granting institutions in the 16-campus University of North Carolina system. Comprised of the College of Arts and Sciences and six professional schools (Business and Economics, Education, Health and Human Performance, Human Environmental Sciences, Music, and Nursing), UNCG has a faculty of over 700 and a student body of approximately 15,000, of whom nearly 3,000 are graduate students.

The Community

Greensboro is a beautiful and thriving city, with a population of around 205,000. The city has its own professional symphony orchestra, community and professional theater companies, arts council, opera company, minor league sports teams, and many outstanding public and private recreational areas and facilities. Greensboro is located in the Piedmont Triad (population 891,000), an area of great natural beauty, diverse industry, cultural arts, and mild temperatures. North Carolina and Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains are an easy two-hour drive from Greensboro and the beaches of North and South Carolina are within a three-five hour drive. Durham, the home of the American Dance Festival, is located less than an hour from Greensboro.

Qualifications:
Terminal degree (MFA or doctoral degree) in dance or related area (ABDs will be considered). At least three years of experience teaching dance in higher education or an equivalent professional setting. Applicants with professional experience as a dance artist, LMA certification, and/or experience in Pilates or somatic practices are encouraged to highlight these qualifications in their letter of application.
